Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery delights visitors with its eye-catching architecture and incredible artworks. Located at Whangārei’s Town Basin, the Hundertwasser Art Centre celebrates the painter, visionary, and environmental activist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, as well as works of contemporary Māori artists which are featured at Wairau Māori Art Gallery.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000) made a significant contribution to the art of the 20th century. He was a cosmopolitan who lived in many countries, first visiting New Zealand in 1973. He acquired land in the Bay of Islands and became a citizen in 1986.

Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery is the last authentic Hundertwasser-designed building in the world. Absolute rationalism, geometric straight lines, and the uniformity of modern architecture is abandoned in favour of new values like uniqueness, romanticism, individuality, and creativity – especially creativity in harmony with nature.

The exhibition Hundertwasser in New Zealand 1973-2000 features an extensive collection of artworks by the late artist, curated by the Hundertwasser Foundation in Vienna.

Wairau Māori Art Gallery is Aotearoa’s first dedicated public Māori art gallery. It promotes Māori creativity, artists, curators, cultural practitioners, and communities. Featuring a series of changing exhibitions, Tohu Whakatipu is the current exhibition, on display until 16 October.

Proudly nestled at the harbourside location chosen by Hundertwasser, the building’s art exhibitions, afforested roof, museum shop, and restaurant-café attract locals and tourists alike – and have welcomed over 45,000 visitors since opening in February.
