Who doesn’t love food? And it’s even better when the food is really, really good! This month I delve into the heavily saturated world of online food blogs. Not just for the experienced chef or the retiree with time on his or her hands, these blogs feature a range of quick, easy and delicious recipes designed to be made by even the most novice of chefs, with recipes for the pickiest and most intolerant eaters. Below are some of my favourite food blogs along with some must-tries.
Love and Lemons
Primarily a blog for the vegetarian eater, this blog features recipes from well-travelled couple Jeanine and Jack. As such, their recipes feature food from all over the world and showcase gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options. Broken down by season, meal type, diet and ingredient, this blog was the winner of the Readers’ Choice Saveur Best Cooking Blog 2014. Check out its recipe for BBQ Portobello Sliders. www.loveandlemons.com
I Am a Food Blog
From Stephanie Le, the author of Easy Gourmet: Awesome Recipes Anyone Can Cook, comes the Saveur Best Cooking Blog and overall 2014 Blog of the Year, I am a Food Blog. Exactly what it says it is, a food blog, it features over 300 recipes, with handy step-by-step images, and also gives the user advice on a range of food-related topics including presentation techniques, a guide to buying the best produce and tips for entertaining. Be sure to try the recipe for Beeramisu: like tiramisu but with beer. www.iamafoodblog.com
Seven Spoons
From cookbook author Tara O’Brady comes Seven Spoons, a food blog for the everyday cook. Subcategorised by food type and course, this is a no-fuss blog with less focus on presentation and more on good-quality food. It is a blog for the sweet tooth; check out Tara’s recipe for Grapefruit and Lemon Tart with Shortbread Crust. It is a citrus explosion and the perfect way to relive summer. Seven Spoons by Tara O’Brady is available on Amazon in hardback or on Kindle. www.sevenspoons.net
The Vanilla Bean Blog
A blog for the sugar enthusiast, this is for the baker in all of us. With a strong focus on desserts, chocolate and breakfast options, this blog also features recipes for the dietary restricted including a number of gluten-free options. Author Sarah Kieffer’s recipes have been featured also in a number of publications including The New York Times, The Huffington Post, Food & Wine and Food52 magazines. Be sure to try her Raspberry-Rhubarb Yoghurt Bowls. www.vanillabeanblog.com
What’s Cooking Good Looking
This blog is more of a lifestyle blog than just simply a cooking website. With an undeniable focus on natural foods and natural cooking, this blog also identifies and explores the connection between health, beauty and the food we consume. Featuring primarily gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan recipes, this blog offers the reader a range of healthy and tasty options for all kinds of entertaining or for a quick snack or a meal prepared with time constraints.
