Wine columnist and connoisseur DENNIS KNILL gives his views on four of Greystone organic wines
A one hour leisurely drive north of Christchurch is one on the fastest wine growing regions in the country. Boasting over eighty vineyards and twenty-five wineries many award winners for producing superior wines from grapes grown in the Waipara Valley. One of these is Greystone Wines
Drawing its name from a unique mixture of limestone, fossils, sea shells and small pebbles fused together over centuries of seismic movement offers the ideal location for grape growing
At the turn of the century the Thomas family recognising there was something special in an old sheep station took the plunge and in 2004 planted grapes in thirteen blocks of land across the Omihi slopes. In 2007 the first wine was produced and from that time Greystone has cemented itself into a major force of producing some of the best organic sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, chardonnay, reisling, gerwurztraminer, pinot noir and syrah in the region
It is no accident that organic wines are gaining immense popularity. What’s in the bottle has been produced without any chemicals and fully accredited
