Wine columnist DENNIS KNILL gives his views on Čuvar Winery diversified range of white wines.
As the winds of change continue to sweep our wine industry with new and interesting varietals, there is so much happening and so much to report. One of the most exciting developments is our latest winery to join the ranks of the supreme, Čuvar Winery, sitting within the portfolio of Fistonich Family Vineyards, the brainchild of Sir George Fistonich – or George, as he’s commonly known.
Of Villa Maria fame, Sir George needs no introduction. His entry into the New Zealand wine industry 63 years ago may have seemed an unlikely choice for someone who decided carpentry wasn’t for him, so he leased five acres in Mangere – and Villa Maria was born. Whilst George has revolutionised the wine industry, it hasn’t always been plain sailing.
With more than 100 vineyards and 80 wineries, Hawke’s Bay is the second-largest wine region in New Zealand. It’s also home to Fistonich Family Vineyards with a portfolio of Čuvar fine wines. Čuvar (meaning guardian in Croatian) was established to help preserve the essence of what makes New Zealand wines so special. Not to be outdone, Čuvar, in the short space of one year, has already been recognised for not only the best single vineyard chardonnay under the Guardians label, but also the ultimate honour of Champion Wine of the Hawke’s Bay Wine Awards.
For those who enjoy fine wines each of these wines have their own flavours and personalities.
