The ins and outs of skin needling

Verve chats to The Global Beauty group about the benefits of having your skin micro needling

There has been lots of buzz lately about dermarolling and its professional counterpart; skin needling. Verve had a chat to beauty suppliers, The Global Beauty Group to learn more about the technology and how it can benefit your skin.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling or Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) is a minimally invasive treatment that is extremely effective at resurfacing the skin and is a brilliant treatment for overall skin rejuvenation. Tiny needles at varying lengths are used to treat acne scarring as well as ageing skin, such as fine lines and wrinkles.

Microneedling is performed with a micro needling pen or skin needling device, and it works by using small needles to puncture the skins barrier, creating tiny micro wounds, which then trigger a healing response within the body. During the regeneration process, new collagen growth is stimulated, resulting is smoother, younger looking skin.

The benefits of skin needling

As well as encouraging skin rejuvenation and increasing production levels of elastin and collagen, skin needling volumises and plumps the complexion, strengthens skin barrier and boosts skin elasticity.

As the new collagen is produced and dispersed, wrinkles appear less deep, fine lines are reduced, pitted skin fills in, texture irregularities become less noticeable, acne scars fade and stretch marks become smoother.

Microneedling pens and skin needling devices are clinically proven to treat some of the most common signs and symptoms of ageing and can:

  • Promote skin repair/rejuvenation
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines (including dynamic and expression lines)
  • Improve the appearance of deep wrinkles
  • Treat scars of the face and body
  • Address unwanted stretch marks and crepe-like skin
  • Improve skin texture and tone
  • Increase cellular turn-over, increase circulation and boost collagen levels
  • Volumise complexion
  • Boost skin elasticity and skin plumpness
  • Increases absorption of products by up to 90%
  • Increase hydration levels

What happens during a treatment?

Suitable for almost all skin types, CIT is an extremely versatile treatment as at it treats a myriad of skin conditions both on the face and body. Treatments are fast and easy to perform. Clients usually require 4-6 treatments, depending on the client’s individual needs. Patients are numbed topically with an anesthetic prior, making the treatment tolerable with minimal discomfort experienced.

The device will create a micro wound which seals within minutes, gently triggering the generation of new tissue whilst respecting the integrity of the epidermis and dermis.

Will I experience any downtime?

Unlike other skin rejuvenation treatments, dermal-needling results in minimal downtime for the patient. Immediately after treatment, clients can expect their skin to feel warm and tight with the skin appearing red for the first couple of hours almost like a mild sunburn. This will start to dissipate within a couple of hours, with only a mild redness remaining the following day. Fresher, brighter, more youthful looking skin will start to appear within 4-6 weeks.

Dermarolling at home

You can even micro needle at home, using a small hand held roller known as a dermaroller. Dermarolling one to 2 times a week will help boost the effects from your professional micro needling treatments as well as increasing the absorption and effectiveness of your skincare products.

It is important you choose a dermaroller from a reputational source, such as your treatment provider. Ideally, you should look for a length of 0.2 – 0.3mm as this is the most optimal length for safely dermarolling at home.

When dermarollering at home, make sure to pull the skin taught so that the needles can get into the wrinkle fold itself. Also make sure to always sanitise your roller after each use with a purpose designed roller cleaner.

Due to its advanced clinical outcomes, micro needling is without a doubt one of the most in-demand and sought after minimally invasive treatments currently on the market.
