The Horwin EK1

Words by Tim Warren

I’m sitting atop a Horwin EK1. It is a compact electric moped that’s a ton of fun while being affordable and practical in equal measure. Sitting in the moped category means you can ride it on a car license, and it doesn’t even need a Warrant of Fitness. Not only does it suite a learner rider, it also makes a very handy portfolio vehicle for when you want something silent and easy around town.

Horwin scooters are much appreciated for their looks, including winning a prestigious Red-Dot award. Putting aside its rather dashing looks, all wrapped in orange, it is incredibly practical and laden with features you don’t always get at this price point. Highlights include reverse, phone compartment with USB charger, a bag hook, and cruise control. And it is more than capable of taking a pillion and the large rear handle makes this easy. Larger tires than typical scooters make for a better riding experience, very good brakes add safety, and it’s only $5,295 +ORC. Brand new.

Scooter

I always put vehicles to the test so I took this scooter for a very comprehensive ride through the conditions it might expect. Traffic at rush hour, town on a busy night, and out to some of the further extent of Auckland.  It handled them all and was a commuter treasure and so easy to park. What stood out was the general hop-on hop-off ease and simplicity of using the bike. With a range of ~80 kilometers under normal driving and just a 3 hour charging time from zero means it’s always ready to go. My only concern with the scooter was not related to do with this model but scooters in general, they feel quite small and sometimes you wonder if other vehicles have seen you, however this is partly outweighed by the fact that this Horwin has very good lights and therefore is quite visible – especially in this scintillating orange!

The EK1 is the baby in the Horwin range, with other models that go faster and pack more. But this is the one I like! So light, so easy! I see it appealing not only to existing moped riders but to a whole new class of people who love a dash of design, a sprinkle of fun, and easy, silent practicality all wrapped up in a cute package like this. There’s a lot to like about this little urban munchkin.
