In a heart-to-heart with Biome’s visionary founder, Rebecca Spencer, we delved into her go-to skincare secrets, the spark that ignited her beauty industry journey, and the enchanting story behind Biome’s game-changing product – the all-new Biome Perfecting Oil.

This wonder ingredient is immediately recognized and accepted by the cell which is when skin transformations happen.
What’s your go to self care activity?
As a skin therapist, I practice what I preach and for me, my absolute favourite self-care treat is a skin treatment! I spend my days delivering beautiful skin treatments in my clinic Biome Skin and Beauty and I really believe in what a great treatment does for not only your skin but also your soul. I like to try different skin clinics around Auckland (we are so spoilt for choice!) For me, a bespoke treatment which addresses my specific skin concerns along with lots of massage and maybe a nice cup of tea to finish leaves me feeling destressed, nurtured and basically like a new woman. I’m happy when my clients tell me they feel the same after visiting me!
Walk us through your morning and nighttime skincare routine?
As a busy working Mum, I’m all about a simple, effective skincare routine which adapts as my skin changes. In the mornings, I don’t use a cleanser, simply a gentle, damp gauze cloth to wipe over my skin. I hold it on my skin for a minute or two to infuse a bit of hydration (on a good morning!) Next, I’ll use a brightening, hydrating eye serum, and for the rest of my face a good targeted serum depending on what skin’s needs are. In winter, I’ll often choose a hyaluronic acid serum to help to counteract seasonal dryness and in the warmer months I love a good vitamin C serum to help to prevent pigmentation and general environmental damage and boost collagen production. For daytime, I like to use a moisturiser with some great antioxidants and an SPF in its formula. SPF is a non-negotiable for me 365 days of the year!
At night, I always double cleanse and around 2-3 nights of the week I’ll use a gentle enzyme exfoliant after cleansing. Next up would be an eye serum and then a few drops of Biome Perfecting Oil of course! Perfecting Oil works to stimulate collagen production, brighten, hydrate, reduce congestion and smooth the skin. I’m in my mid-40s now so I love that it really helps to counteract the textural changes that come with age. It also smells and feels luxurious making it such a treat to use!
What motivated you to start BIOME?
I’ve enjoyed many amazing roles in the beauty industry, including skin therapist, spa therapist, skincare educator and clinic owner but I’ve always aspired to create my own skincare product. It was while I was living on board a superyacht in Sweden with my little baby girl Billie that I really started to question my ‘why’. We had followed Billie’s Dad as he captained the yacht and to be honest, I was feeling a bit lost in my personal life and mentally unfulfilled. I knew this was the time to dig deep and make my long-held dreams become a reality. Through years of experience as a skin expert, I felt I knew what people were looking for when it came to skincare and what worked. I had a clear vision of a super-product that would simplify skincare routines, and really create positive change in people’s skin. I enrolled in an online small business course, began obsessively researching ingredients and 7 years later (yes, 7!) Biome Perfecting Oil was born.
What inspires you to focus on beautiful skincare?
I feel very lucky to be able to connect with women every day in my work, spending intimate time with them and helping them to feel good in their skin. As women, we spend a great deal of time and energy taking care of others and I wanted to create something that made women feel beautiful, confident and brought a bit of luxury into their day. Over the years I have learnt that most women are pretty confused when it comes to the world of skincare and I don’t blame them! I encourage new clients to bring in their complicated mish-mash of skincare purchases so we can work together to streamline their routines. My inspiration for creating Biome Perfecting Oil was to help women to be able to make achieving their best skin easy and enjoyable with a high-performance, multitasking product that treats a number of common skin concerns in one easy step. I wanted women to feel good about what they were putting on their skin so included premium, clean ingredients with powerful yet non-irritating actives which work to transform the skin.
