The Art of Auckland Domain | The Domain Collection

The Domain Collection

Poised to rise from the former HQ of Fidelity Life insurers at 81 Carlton Gore Road is a masterpiece of residential living called The Domain Collection. Sixty-nine residences will be spread between two striking buildings that pay homage to their privileged location directly opposite Auckland Domain, the brainchild of award-winning local developers Lamont & Co and architect Warren and Mahoney.

“The Domain Collection is like a piece of art,” says Blair Johnston, head of design at Warren and Mahoney. “It’s clearly connected to its surroundings but has its own glamorous identity that’s bold with an air of playfulness, reminiscent of the Domain’s purpose as one of Auckland’s great playgrounds.”

The existing seven-level structure will be extended and rejuvenated to form the Park Residences, which will include luxury residences plus high-end penthouses with unencumbered park and city views, as well as three-car garaging. Nestled behind is the Garden Residences, a new six-level, north-facing building. The two buildings will be connected via a ‘secret garden’, designed by Philip Smith of O2 Landscapes, as an ode to the volcanic gardens that form such an integral part of Auckland Domain.

“This is not a simple, standard apartment block,” continues Blair. “An incredible amount of thought and attention has gone into every aspect of the project’s design.  As the only residential building in direct sight from the Auckland War Memorial Museum it was critical that the architecture reflects and respects the space it occupies within the grandeur of the Domain.  Materiality such as wood, concrete, and stone have been used to connect the built-form within the natural landscape, while the colour palette is neutral, allowing the people and nature to provide the colour.”

The new residential offering for Newmarket is backed by financier ICON Developments, an Australian-based wholly owned subsidiary of Japanese construction and real estate development giant, Kajima Corporation. It marks ICON Development’s first project in New Zealand.

“We are excited to be able to work with local specialists Lamont & Co in the delivery of a unique project that will meet the demand for luxury apartment living in New Zealand,” says Matthew Bourke, ICON Developments’ CEO. Andrew and Tim Lamont, the brothers behind the award-winning Lamont & Co are equally excited about helping shape what it means to live in Auckland.

“We always look for sites that have a unique point of difference with the ambition to create unrepeatable projects,” says Andrew. “This site is so exceptional, and we are proud to be developing it.”

“We wanted to deliver something new to Auckland’s residential landscape with this project,” adds Tim. “The elevation means homes will have expansive views to the north over the Domain towards the city skyline, or south towards Mount Hobson, Mount Eden, and One Tree Hill, which will never be built out.”

The residential offerings include one- to four-bedroom layouts with sizeable outdoor terraces and 400sq m penthouses. A gorgeous touch is the addition of an artwork inspired by Auckland Domain, commissioned from renowned New Zealand artist Karl Maughan. The work will be used throughout the marketing campaign and installed in the display suite. It may one day adorn the wall of a residence in the Domain Collection.

“The Domain Collection will offer an array of options to suit different tastes and budgets,” says Tim. “Our aim is always to bring something charismatic to the market – to create homes that people are proud of and that are in harmony with Kiwi-lifestyle aspirations.”
