Wine columnist and connoisseur DENNIS KNILL gives his views on two Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel wines for the month.
From modest planting of 30 hectares of vines and a small underground cellar, Jacob’s Creek has emerged as one of the finest wineries in Australia, producing some of the world’s leading wine brands.
If it was not for the vision and enterprise by Johann Gramp in 1847 who planted the first vines along the banks of Jacob’s Creek, the winery would never have got off the ground. In 1850 Gramp and Sons was established and a new winery built to market the first vintage. Fast forward 175 years of exceptional winemaking – some of the best wines produced in this region continues to this day.
Here are two value-for-money wines worth exploring.
’20 Jacobs Creek Double Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon
Displays great structure and texture with an abundance of concentrated fruit, delivering great balance. The firm background of ripe dry tannins makes this a crowd pleaser. Magnificent when paired with roast beef, lamb, duck, pork, veal, and game.
RRP $24
’20 Jacobs Creek Double Barrel Shiraz
Rich and satisfying in flavour, this very affordable full-bodied wine is long and well-structured with a smooth and soft tannin finish that sits well on the palate. Nothing beats a glass of shiraz with roast beef, lamb cutlets, veal, lamb, and barbequed meats.
RRP $24
