Skincare 101 – Do’s and Don’ts for Winter

The thing is – no one and we do mean no one has absolutely perfect skin, all of the time – especially in the colder months, it’s simply not realistic. With the rise of social media and the pervasive use of “perfecting” and smoothing filters, it can be sometimes hard to remember that skin wasn’t designed to be that way.

Just like our other organs or any other part of our bodies, skin is a living, breathing thing, and as such is subject to all kinds of variables, some of which we can control, some of which we can’t. This is especially true in winter when our poor faces are exposed to the harsh elements and the cold, blistering winds, arctic-like dropping temperatures, in-door heating can all wreak havoc on our poor skin.

As we know skin health is super important, after all happy skin is healthy skin and no matter your skin type, winter can inflict a whole host of assorted and tricky skin conditions. From mild to severe skin dehydration, rough, dry or flakey patches, chapped lips, poor circulation, an increase in fine lines, redness or even rosacea or psoriasis flare-ups for some.

And that’s not even taking into account the lack of sunshine and good old vitamin D which can have a serious impact on our general mood and overall well-being. So…all that to be said, winter can be a challenging time for our skin.

The impact winter can have on your skin

Even for those that love the chiller weather, winter is full of environmental stressors that can cause damage to your skin. When it gets to the colder months, your skin will likely feel drier and you may experience patches of flakiness, as well as having to deal with redness, dullness and breakouts.

Knowing how to adapt your winter skincare routine to give your skin what it needs during the long cold season is essential. The cold air, low humidity and indoor heating can deplete your skin’s natural moisture, increase sensitivities and damage your skin barrier – leading to dryness, irritation and a dull complexion.

By making a few strategic changes, you can maintain healthy, hydrated and radiant- looking skin throughout the winter months. From switching your moisturiser to adding in a new cleanser, we have plenty of tips to keep your skin happy and healthy this season.

Do: Hydrate from the Inside Out

Hydration is key to maintaining healthy skin, especially in winter. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Herbal teas and warm water with lemon can also be great options to keep your hydration levels up while also staying warm.

Don’t: Overlook the Importance of Moisturising

Moisturising is crucial during the winter months. Choose a rich, nourishing moisturiser that provides a strong barrier against the harsh elements. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides that help lock in moisture and protect your skin. Apply your moisturiser immediately after showering or washing your face to trap in as much moisture as possible.

Do: Opt for a Gentle Cleanser

The winter weather and harsh winds can easily compromise your skin’s natural barrier, making it prone to dryness and irritation. Switch to a gentle cleanser during winter to avoid stripping your skin of its natural oils. Instead opt for cream or oil-based cleansers that cleanse without over-drying. Harsh soaps and foaming cleansers can leave your skin feeling tight and dry, so it’s best to avoid them during the colder months.

Don’t: Take Long, Hot Showers

Hot showers might feel great, but they can be detrimental to your skin. Prolonged exposure to hot water can strip your skin of essential oils, leaving it dry and irritated. Instead, take shorter, lukewarm showers and immediately apply a moisturizer afterward to lock in much-needed moisture.

Do: Exfoliate Regularly, but Gently

Regular exfoliation is essential for removing dead skin cells and keeping your skin smooth and glowing. However, over-exfoliating can cause irritation, especially when your skin is that little bit more sensitive during winter. Use a mild exfoliant, such as a gentle scrub or a chemical exfoliant with lactic or glycolic acid and limit exfoliation to once or twice a week. Consider professional hydro dermabrasion sessions for an extra moisture boost, as treatments with a hydro dermabrasion machine infuse the skin with much-needed hydrating ingredients whilst gently exfoliating the skin at the same time.

Don’t: Skip Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must even in winter. The sun’s UV rays can penetrate clouds and still cause damage to your skin. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 on all exposed areas of your skin, including your face, neck, and hands. This will help protect your skin from premature ageing and reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Do: Protect Your Lips

Your lips need extra care in winter as the cold air and wind can cause them to become dry and chapped. Use a hydrating lip balm with ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, and lanolin. Reapply frequently throughout the day to keep your lips soft and moisturised and invest in an overnight lip mask to keep beside your bed.

Do: Incorporate Face Oils

Unless you have extremely dry skin year-round, you likely skip using oils during the warmer months. However, cooler weather rolls around, it’s the  ideal time to reintroduce these luxurious, hydrating treatments back into your routine. Contrary to their name, face oils won’t make your skin oily but instead will help improve moisture retention, enhancing the effectiveness of your other hydrating products during the colder months.

Don’t: Forget About Your Hands

Hands often get neglected in our skincare routines, but they can suffer greatly in winter. Use a rich hand cream regularly, especially after washing your hands. Look for ingredients like glycerin and shea butter that provide deep hydration and protection.

Do: Incorporate a Humidifier

Indoor heating can dry out the air, which in turn dries out your skin. Using a humidifier in your home can add moisture back into the air, helping to keep your skin hydrated. Place a humidifier in your bedroom or living area to maintain a comfortable humidity level.

Don’t: Use Harsh Products

Avoid products with alcohol and strong fragrances, as these can further dry out and irritate your skin. Stick to products that are labeled as hydrating, soothing, or specifically formulated for sensitive skin.

Do: Adjust Your Skincare Routine

Your skin’s needs change with the seasons, so it’s important to adjust your skincare routine accordingly. You might need a heavier moisturiser, a gentler cleanser, or more frequent application of hydrating skincare products. Pay attention to how your skin responds and be willing to make changes to keep it healthy and happy.

Don’t: Ignore Diet and Lifestyle

Your skin’s health is closely linked to your overall well-being so ensure you are eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and healthy fats can provide essential nutrients that support skin health and encourage natural collagen production. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish, flaxseeds and walnuts are all particularly beneficial for maintaining your skin’s moisture barrier.

Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate your skin. Ensure you get enough sleep, manage stress and exercise regularly to maintain overall skin health.

Do: Consult a Professional

If you’re struggling with your skin despite following these tips, consider consulting a dermatologist or skincare professional and getting a skin analysis with a professional skin analyzer. They can provide personalized advice and recommend products or treatments tailored to your specific needs and help you work toward your skin goals.

Whilst it may not be realistic to have flawless, perfect skin all the time, especially in winter – it doesn’t have to mean dull, dry skin. By following these do’s and don’ts, you can maintain a radiant, healthy complexion all season long. So, embrace the winter months with confidence, knowing your skin is well-protected and cared for…and Summer will be here before you can say boo!
