On our radar for 2025 is the exciting new programme from the Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB). Artistic director Ty King-Wall continues to push his vision with a fascinating programme that promises to deliver classical favourites with a selection of adventurous new works and unique collaborations.
A key highlight, and one not to be missed, comes in March when the RNZB partners with Scottish Ballet for performances in Wellington only. The collaboration will showcase bold contemporary works, including a 20-minute piece inspired by Joan Rivers and Pedro Almodóvar.
In April, The Firebird returns to stages across Aotearoa, paired with Cathy Marston’s My Brilliant Career, in a double bill exploring themes of transformation and identity. Both will feature live orchestral accompaniment.
July sees what is set to be one of the most exciting performances of the year – Home, Land and Sea. The programme takes its name from a new work by acclaimed choreographer and New Zealand Arts Laureate Moss Te Ururangi Patterson, created in collaboration with The New Zealand Dance Company and inspired by Aotearoa New Zealand’s cultural heritage, with new music composed by Tane Upjohn-Beatson and Shayne Carter. Chrysalis, a new creation by RNZB Choreographer in Residence Shaun James Kelly and The Way Alone by Australian Stephen Baynes complete a generous programme of brilliant dance and powerful story telling.
To wrap what promises to be a busy and stimulating year for ballet fans, the RNZB will perform, pre-Christmas, The Nutcracker. Be prepared for a touch of Kiwi summer magic with this classic ballet, complete with stunning design by the great Tracy Grant Lord.
Having the national ballet on our doorstep is something to be celebrated and supported. It might just be time to invest in that season pass.
