When Profhilo finally reached our shores in 2021 it was a bit like menopause. We had heard the rumours, we had even done the reading, but nothing quite prepares you for the reality.
The ‘I want what she’s had’ treatment was quick to take off and fast to become a favourite amongst all age groups.
Research now shows that Profhilo, because of its combination of high-weight HA designed to stimulate collagen and elastin, and its low-weight HA for hydration, can be used much more frequently than first thought.
Traditional HA dermal fillers are made to replace volume and while some are low viscosity or are soft for more mobile areas of the face, overuse can leave the skin appearing puffy.
Profhilo lends itself to a wide range of patients, with collagen and elastin production beginning to slow from as early as our 20s, with those who see the largest difference are often women experiencing menopause. Which brings with it some of the most radical changes to our skin since puberty.
Everyone’s experience is different, but here are some of the typical effects, you can expect to see on your skin during perimenopause, menopause, and eventually post menopause:
- decreased oestrogen receptor expression
- rapid decline in skin collagen in menopause with one third lost in the first five years
- increase in trans-epidermal water loss and decrease in skin barrier function
- decrease in dermal thickness
- elastin degeneration increasing and skin becoming slack, with more rhytids (minor creases) appearing. Menopause hormone therapy does not really affect elastin; therefore, we need to look at other options
Profhilo is also easy to accommodate into a busy schedule with very little downtime.
To maintain the optimum benefits of Profhilo, we now recommend single treatments can be done as often as every 3-4 months.
