The Rennell family, owners and operators of Ellerslie Jewellery and Engravers, have been heavily involved in the community for years. Verve interviewed Annick Rennell about her recent return to launch her new jewellery collection, Annick, from her father’s store in Ellerslie Village.
How long have your parents owned Ellerslie Jewellers and Engravers for, and what was it like growing up working in the store?
My dad, John, has been in the jewellery trade for over 50 years, with my parents opening Ellerslie Jewellers and Engravers in 2000. I always enjoyed working here during school and uni holidays, and developed a love for jewellery, gemstones and fashion from a very early age.
What was your career overseas, and what drew you back to Ellerslie?
After exploring the fashion and interior design industries both here and abroad, I worked in television as a writer before moving to print media as a stylist and creative director – even enjoying a stint as a fashion editor for a major publication. I’ve now come back to my roots, working alongside Dad and creating my own branded jewellery range. Enamoured with the way jewellery extends our fashion choices, Annick brings my love of colour and my knowledge of the trade – passed on to me through Dad – to my jewellery collection.
Where have you found inspiration for your new collection?
The inspiration for Annick stems from my love of bold colour, design and fashion. I’m definitely a mix-not-match kind of girl and Annick certainly reflects my personal style. It’s a colourful and contemporary jewellery collection that strives to elevate our customers’ everyday jewellery look with carefully curated pieces that are elegant, versatile enough to take you from day to night, fashion-forward, and feminine. Just as we’ve embraced the entire colour spectrum in our homes and wardrobes, today’s women are looking beyond white diamonds to the kaleidoscopic world of coloured gemstones. Nature provides an infinite palette to flatter any style and skin tone!
What was the biggest challenge in launching Annick?
Time. With three children and a busy role at Ellerslie Jewellers and Engravers, time – or lack thereof – has proved to be my biggest challenge.
