Acclaimed NZ choreographer Sarah Foster-Sproull is back in the limelight this winter with her incredible dance piece, ORCHIDS. This exploration of the female psyche is loaded with such power and beauty that it moved audiences to tears during its 2017 premiere at Tempo Dance Festival. Seven highly skilled dancers spanning three generations, alongside a group of powerhouse creatives, bring ORCHIDS to full bloom – returning to Auckland at Q Theatre from July 17 and for the first time in Wellington at Circa Theatre from July 24.
“It is perhaps the most honest examination of femininity that I have seen… The truth of women’s relationships emerges: the enfolding warmth of support and nurturing versus the cut and thrust of unwarranted negativity and obstruction – Jennifer Stevenson, Theatreview
Born from a fascination with the mythology that surrounds the orchid flower, ORCHIDS follows the story of seven women at various stages in their lives – mother, daughter, confidant, lover, fighter, child and goddess. These women’s relationships emerge in unusual and surprising ways – intertwining underneath designer Andrew Foster’s large, mystical silk structure to conjure awe-inspiring images: a “pregnant planet”; the dark storm cloud of Medusa’s rage; a black moon symbolising the ‘Great Goddess’; a shadowy womb.
