Need some laughter in your life? The Covert Theatre is Auckland’s newest theatre, and is full of some of the city’s best comedic acts. The Theatre is New Zealand’s only full time comedy theatre with a fully licensed bar in the heart of Auckland, located at 51 Mackelvie St, Ponsonby.
The Covert Theatre was originally opened on Karangahape Road in 2001, but closed its doors in 2005. It has been hiring venues all over Auckland for the last 15 years, and now once again has a home in Ponsonby.
The theatre is home to some of New Zealand’s top improv comedy acts such as A Bard’s Tale, The Improv Bandits, and C-Suite.
Its purpose is to enhance human connection through play, and it promotes connection through a meaningful way all while making people laugh. The theatre is a breeding ground for New Zealand’s future comedians, actors, directors, and creatives. As well as this, the Covert Theatre is a wonderful experience for the general public to explore their comedic side, or just to watch a show and have a giggle.
The Covert Theatre runs an improv school from Monday to Wednesday, which includes classes for all ages. From Thursday to Sunday, the theatre will make you laugh out loud with shows in the evenings, and also includes a Sunday afternoon family comedy show.
