How to be a Fashion Revolutionary
Earth Month is upon us, and so is Fashion Revolution Week. Founded in the wake of the Rana Plaza disaster, a garment factory collapse that took the lives of 1,134 people, Fashion Revolution is precisely how it sounds, a movement for change within the fashion industry.
Ten years on, the Fashion Revolution community has grown in over 75 countries, inspiring people all over the world to challenge their relationship with fashion and consider the responsibility they have.
In the decade since Fashion Revolution’s conception, climate change has become a prominent topic of public conversation, and with it, the question of how we can do better. Every industry has had to reckon with its impact, and being a relatively unregulated sector, fashion is no exception.
The Fashion Revolution team in New Zealand is exclusively made up of volunteers, all inspired by the common goal of action. This structure has allowed for great diversity, as people from all corners of New Zealand have found their way onto the team. Each member brings a special perspective garnered from their personal and professional experiences.
Every year, in honour of the tragedy that has served as a landslide into the Fashion Revolution movement, we celebrate Fashion Revolution Week. It is a time to share knowledge, celebrate progress, and support each other. The week’s events are led by Fashion Revolution Ambassadors and intended to serve as a reminder of why this work is so important.
This year’s theme, “How to be a Fashion Revolutionary”, is focused on emphasising the part we all play in progress. Events that are happening in New Zealand include:
- Fabric Forward, an exhibition reimagining the future of textile waste, which will take place at Strand Arcade, Queen Street in Auckland from 15-24 April. The exhibition intends to showcase the possibilities for textile waste and encourage alternatives to the common ending of landfills.
- Mend In Public Day, happening in collaboration with New Zealand label, Untouched World, is a garment mending workshop that will be held at the Untouched World retail store in Christchurch from 15-19
- Fashion Revolution New Zealand has also set up a Give a Little page intended to support its future initiatives, all in the name of the Fashion Revolution movement!
Speaking with Amanda Butterworth, the Country Coordinator of Fashion Revolution New Zealand, she expressed her excitement for the coming week, saying, “Every year, it is so incredible to see our team share the movement with New Zealand. The Fashion Revolution needs everyone, everywhere and I hope that we are able to inspire more fashion revolutionaries among us!”
