Western Australian Artist Bronwen Newbury was the 2021 Waiheke Artist in Residence.
Newbury found Waiheke challenging to paint, a vastly different environment to the flat horizons and arid red/oranges of Australia. Here she found the green and dark hues of winter, the shady bush and the beauty of the winter light, how it bathes the hillsides in the evenings and filters onto bush paths. Enjoying the gift of time to explore and develop her own visual language, she created stylistic vignettes of time and place. Layering up the paint with accomplished brush strokes and adding touches of bright inks.
A professional artist of over 30 years’ experience, Newbury was recently announced as 2021 overall winner of Western Australia’s Cossack Art Award. In speaking about her work Judge John Teschendorff likened Newbury’s work to renowned Australian artists Arthur Boyd and Fred Williams. “It has the same gentle authority over landscape – every time you look at the painting, you see something different and that’s the story of landscape.
