There’s no doubt about it, going on safari in Africa is an absolute bucket list experience.
Who hasn’t wanted to see first-hand those exotic African animals in their true natural environment? Not just the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and buffalo), but also giraffe, hippopotamus, cheetah, crocodile, zebra, hyena, wildebeest, gazelle, eland, marabou stork—the list is endless.
But it’s not just the incredible wildlife, it’s the total immersive experience people wish for. The breathtaking scenery; the friendly people; the luxurious lodges or authentic tented camps; the thrill of riding along in a four-wheel-drive on a real safari, or being paddled in a mokoro (dugout canoe) observing the water-life. For some, it includes trekking to see gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda, or relaxing coastal stays in Zanzibar, Mozambique or Cape Town. Observing the great migration in East Africa is a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle.
Of course, there are safari options to suit most budgets and ambitions. There are mobile camping or fly-in safaris; you can travel with a group, or enjoy a tailor-made experience. And of course, a great variety of wilderness environments including the Serengeti, Amboseli, Masai Mara, Chobe, the Okavango Delta, Moremi, Etosha, Kruger, Sabi Sabi and more.
For most, planning an African trip is a reasonable expenditure so it’s important to organise the best trip possible for your budget. You don’t want to end up in bad accommodation, the wrong season, or simply going about your travels in a way that is not at all suitable for what you are trying to achieve. Will you see the animals from afar, or close up? Will you see the animals you want to at all? With myriad choices, it is important to get a specialist to help you get your ideal travel experience.
