It may not feel like barbecue weather just yet, but as health-conscious consumers become more aware of the need for a balanced diet purveyors of smallgoods are on notice.

Beard Brothers, a family-owned specialty butcher, is meeting these challenges by expanding its selection of healthy eating gourmet sausages and patties that range from traditional beef, pork, venison, and chicken sausages to beef and pork patties to their latest innovation and everyone’s favourite: sausage rolls with crisp-flaky-puff pastry.

It all started from small beginnings in Hawke’s Bay, hometown of Rob Beard who grew up honing his hunting and cooking skills and with an understanding where food on the table comes from. Frustrated with the poor quality of sausages available, Rob decided to make his own the old-fashioned way using heritage recipes. Today, Beard Brothers, under Rob’s stewardship, is thriving and has claimed a number of culinary awards for their comprehensive range of specialty smallgoods.

Sounds easy, but to source quality, grass-fed free-farmed meat from a trusted network of suppliers proved to be more than a challenge.

After countless tastings, Beard Brothers has developed an extensive variety of gourmet sausages and patties with an assortment that’s interesting and flavoursome and made to such a high standard that you’d be hard pressed to find a better equivalent. As well as the customary sausages, the diverse range includes pure beef, pork, venison, and chicken, and sausages blended with spiced apple, puha, cress, and bull dust. Boerewors – the original sausage of South Africa – are also winners and a must for the barbecue.
