After years of dwindling viewership and increasing consumer demand for same week releases, TVNZ, SKYTV and Media Works finally seem to have got the message and are now bringing same week/same day programming to New Zealand, reducing the need for series streaming, legally of course.
NEW SERIES Gotham: The DC Comics prequel to the Batman Series, Gotham screens the same week as in the United States. Starring Ben McKenzie as a young Jim Gordon, this series chronicles the youth of a young Bruce Wayne and the events that lead to him becoming Batman. Gotham has recently been picked up for a full season order, so expect this one to stick around.
NEW SERIES The Flash: Also screening the same week as in the United States is another freshman series from the DC universe, The Flash. A reimagining of the original series, The Flash follows young scientist Barry Allen as he learns he is the fastest man alive. Closely associated with incumbent DC hero series Arrow, this series premiered strongly, with adolescents in the United States, so expect a full season order.
Marvels Agents of Shield: Returning series Marvels Agents of Shield screens, the same week as in the United States. Chronicling the agents tasked with identifying superheroes, this series is riding the Marvel wave, with movie franchises Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America leading the charge.
The Walking Dead: Mega series The Walking Dead screens the same day as in the United States. In its fifth season, the highest rating cable show in the United States is a fan favourite and continues to deliver huge ratings for TVNZ resulting in same day screening for Kiwis.
Media Works — TV3
Sons of Anarchy: Sons of Anarchy gets a same week release, as the long running series concludes at the end of this, it’s seventh season. The FX series continues to draw huge numbers and will no doubt end in the most violent way possible, as has been the shows defining factor.
The Blacklist: The Blacklist drew unprecedented numbers across the globe when it premiered earlier this year. Quickly back for a second season, The Blacklist continues to be a big drawcard for NBC Universal and TV3, so this show gets a same day release.
SKYTV — SoHo
NEW SERIES The Affair: The Affair chronicles the extramarital affairs of two couples in the sleepy town on Montauk, Long Island. Picked up for a full season order uncharacteristically early for producers Showtime, viewers can watch this the same week as in the United States.
Homeland: Returning to SOHO for its fourth season is the multi-award winning, Homeland. A same week release for SOHO subscribers, SKYTV picked up the series when MediaWorks couldn’t retain the rights in late 2013.
American Horror Story: Freak Show: Back for its fourth season the ensemble cast of American Horror Story are based in Florida as the hidden world of sideshow circus freaks is explored. A same week release, the show has already been picked up for a further season having just released one episode of this season.
