“Every successful business venture began with an idea, an idea that often comes from an ‘aha’ moment; for me, that idea came when I was at a low point in my life.
Two years ago I would have laughed if someone told me that I would be a self-employed entrepreneur. I grew up with parents who were successful entrepreneurs but it wasn’t something I was ever interested in pursuing.
Quite frankly, I was happy with my 9-5 because it paid the bills and supported my lifestyle. However, I knew that I lacked purpose, I was just going through the motions and experiencing what I call my ‘quarter life crisis’.
That all changed five days before Christmas, I was fired. Being told you are no longer needed is never thrilling, it was horrible and scary but I chose to see it as a way out towards a new adventure.
My initial motivation went down after spending two months achieving nothing career-wise; I stayed in my pajamas all day and indulged in Netflix. I wasn’t totally unproductive however, I applied for jobs in different sectors including early childhood education, which is my background, but never received a positive response.
Close to the end of that second month, I received a request that changed everything, this request opened my eyes to possibilities, a business idea and a drive.
My mum’s coworker (a real estate agent) asked if I would like to help an 89-year-old gentleman ‘Roy’ declutter, sell items and move from his four-bedroom home to a one bedroom retirement village apartment.
This was an opportunity I couldn’t refuse because I needed the money; however, after spending the first two days with Roy, I knew this was a job that I wanted to do full-time.
This idea led to the creation of Miss Clutter Bug in Auckland. For over a year, that idea has propelled me to work even harder than I did in my 9-5, often times working 7 days a week and 12 hours daily. Nonetheless, it has been satisfying, I have chosen to be positive and excited about each step. This has led to growth for the company and now we have more services, staff, and amazing clients that just make life better.
Miss Clutter Bug is a decluttering/organising and home help service – we cover all of Auckland. You can find us on Facebook – Miss Clutter Bug- NZ or check us out at www.missclutterbug.nz.
Thank you and have a great day!
