At Eternity’s Gate

ON CHESIL BEACH (DVD)

12 DEC
Director: Dominic Cooke
Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Billy Howle, Emily Watson,
Anne-Marie Duff, Samuel West and Bebe Cave

A powerful, insightful drama about two people, both defined by their upbringing, bound by the social mores of another era centres on Florence (Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn) and Edward (Billy Howle, Dunkirk), a young couple in their early twenties. Now on their honeymoon, they learn about the differences between them – their attitudes, temperaments and their drastically different backgrounds. Out on the beach on their fateful wedding day, one of them makes a major decision that will utterly change both of their lives forever.

AT ETERNITY’S GATE

20 DEC
Director: Julian Schnabel
Cast: Oscar Isaac, Willem Dafoe, Rupert Friend,
Mathieu Amalric and Emmanuelle Seigner

Julian Schnabel’s ravishingly tactile and luminous new film takes a fresh look at the last days of Vincent van Gogh, and in the process revivifies our sense of the artist as a living, feeling human being. Schnabel; his co-writers Jean-Claude Carrière and Louise Kugelberg, also the film’s editor; and cinematographer Benoît Delhomme strip everything down to essentials, fusing the sensual, the emotional, and the spiritual. And the pulsing heart of At Eternity’s Gate is Willem Dafoe’s shattering performance: his Vincent is at once lucid, mad, brilliant, helpless, defeated, and, finally, triumphant.

Vice

26 DEC
Director: Adam McKay
Cast: Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Steve Carell,
Sam Rockwell,  Alison Pill and Lily Rabe

Oscar winning writer/director Adam McKay (The Big Short) brings his trademark wit to the true story of US Vice President Dick Cheney in VICE. George W. Bush (Rockwell) wins the 2000 election, but it’s Cheney (Bale) who quietly takes charge, wielding his newfound power as vice president to reshape the country and the world – with lasting consequences. Featuring magnificent performances from Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell, VICE is a smart, irreverent comedy-drama that will shock and entertain in equal measure.

A group of forty-something guys, all on the verge of a mid-life crisis, decide to form their local pool’s first ever synchronised swimming team, for men. Braving the scepticism and ridicule of those around them, and trained by a fallen champion trying to pull herself together, the group set out on an unlikely adventure, and on the way will rediscover a little self-esteem and a lot about themselves and each other.
